Can seniors take cannabis treatment?
Yes, they can. Cannabis has shown to be promising on problems affecting the health and well being of seniors, such as relieving Alzheimer’s disease, chronic pain and lack of appetite, as well as mental conditions such as anxiety and depression. And the best part, with no psychoactive effect.
Pain, insomnia and anxiety are some of the most common reasons for using cannabis. Research published by the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, last year, shows that senior Americans are finding in cannabis, a new relief for those problems.
The study was carried out with 568 anonymous patients ages 65 or older. The results showed that 15% used cannabis in the last 3 years, 53% said they used cannabis regularly for medical purposes and 61% of patients started taking cannabis after 60 years old.
“Surprisingly we found that almost ⅗ of cannabis users related using it for the first time as older adults. These individuals were their own group, compared to those who used cannabis in the past.” said Kevin Yang, one of the authors of the study.
Given the increase in availability of CBD only products, compared to products containing THC, researchers said it’s likely for future research to continue documenting a higher proportion of older adults using cannabis or cannabis based products.
